Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!
A special thank you to Na’ama for the photo and Rochelle for choosing it. It’s a marvellous prompt!

A warm deed
Jack strode beside the security fence, kicking up snow. He wasn’t frightened, but he slowed when he saw a figure on the far side.
The boy was as tall as Jack, but skinny and shivering.
“You look freezing.”
The boy nodded.
“I have no coat.”
“Not even at home?”
“No.”
Jack stripped off his new duffel-coat and threw it up the fence. It didn’t even reach halfway. He tried again. No better.
“I know,” he said, and climbed a tree almost overhanging the fence. He threw, and the coat sailed over the fence.
The boy put it on, and smiled.
I wonder why the boy was behind a security fence. Was he a refugee, perhaps (given that this is the way we tend to treat asylum seekers)

Thank you for your thoughtful reading of my story. The boy is Everyman.

Dear Penny,
That Jack is such a thoughtful human being. I love the way he went (literally) over the top to deliver his kindness. This made me smile all over.

What a generous man. No judgment, just simple love.
Beautifully done.

Thank you for reading so perceptively. There was indeed a risk that Jack could have ‘judged’. Society so often erects great security fences between ‘us’ and ‘them’, purely on the basis of some perceived difference.

Random acts of kindness with no reward other than knowing you “did good” are so needed these days. An “army” of “jacks” would make the world a better place.

That’s the kind of gesture seldom seen these days, that NEEDS to be seen more often. Reminded me of something a foster-sister said when she returned from duty in Germany… she had seen people throwing bundles and boxes of food over the Berlin wall. It touched me then, much as this story does now. Good one.

Dear Bear
Thank you for such a lovely comment. I’m delighted you mentioned the Berlin Wall, because I hoped the story might prompt readers to ask why we build walls between us. xxx

So we can tear them down, of course… 🙂 I’m glad to see at least one comment got through. My computer is going nutty after a fall from table.
