Friday Fictioneers – Nothing Pink

Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!

Nothing pink

It was beautiful.

I wanted it.

It was a toy washing machine, pink and shiny.

I pointed it out to Mom, showing her the battery powered motor that turned the drum, and the laundry baskets for your dolls’ clothes.

‘It would be a lovely Christmas present,’ I hinted.

‘Do you think Catherine would like it?’

I shrugged, ‘I expect so. I meant for…’

‘Oh, look at this, John!’ said Mom, brightly. ‘It’s a proper telescope. You could see the moon and planets and…all sorts of things.’

‘Fascinating,’ I sighed.

Nothing pink for me on Christmas morning.

Just a bloody telescope.

Too far

“I’m setting off now, Jen. Be with you about ten.”

“I wish you’d stay there overnight, Mike.”

“It’s only three hundred miles, love”

“Yes, but you drove down this morning.”

“I’ll be okay.”

Half an hour later and I’m on the Expressway, cruise control set to seventy; no point in collecting a speeding ticket. The setting sun in my rear view mirror is dazzling.

I yawn.

The traffic isn’t heavy and I go steadily.

Into the last fifty miles now, on a single carriageway. Soon be home with Jenny!

Headlights dazzle me. What the heck? That lorry’s on the wrong…

PHOTO PROMPT (C) ROGER BULTOT

Beauty

Gerald scavenged breakfast, leaving his sleeping bag at the bottom of the steps. Nobody touched it. Did they pity Gerald? More likely it was the human impulse to avoid contamination.

The café was worth a try, provided he went round the back where the customers couldn’t see him. Today was a good day; he was given a bacon roll with his coffee. Mumbling thanks, he shuffled off.

Down the street between trash cans, an old man coughed until his eyes were bloodshot. Gerald sat down and handed him half the bacon roll.

There’s always someone worse off you can help.
