Vive le Quebec libre!

In my youth I travelled to many countries, and in July 1967 chance took me to Montreal. Strolling to my hotel, I was musing on de Gaulle’s inflammatory speech – ‘Vive le Quebec libre’, indeed! – and barely noticed a small group carrying a large and unseasonal Christmas tree.

The group was led by a rather attractive young woman, who asked if I would kindly take a photograph of them. She smiled, I obliged, went on my way and forgot the incident.

Until yesterday, when I received the following email.

‘It’s over fifty years since you took this photograph. Do you remember?’

Memory’s mirror

I first met Stephen at a concert in the Albert Hall. The shocking revelation that this man was my soul-mate almost battered me to the floor. I don’t know how I hid my emotion from my husband.

Of course, the whole thing was hopeless. I had children, Stephen had children, and, in any case, we loved our spouses, we really did. There was never more than the occasional silence, or a shy smile.

Now I’m old, a widow. My children live faraway; we see each other a few times a year, no more.

I often think about Stephen – and wonder.

Manifesto

Sister, you know there’s something wrong with the world.

Men continue to rape the environment despite global warming. They build nuclear weapons which will poison the biosphere for ever. They slaughter civilians in vicious, local wars. And all for status!

It’s time for women to save the world from this madness.

We take our name from the ancient Greek; we are Maenads. We foresee the future, but unlike our predecessors we do so through sobriety and careful planning. Together, our strength is irresistible.

If you want to join us, sister, look for the mask of Dionysos.

You will be welcome.

Winding Up

‘I want to know if we’re bloody solvent!’ yelled Pauline. ‘Can we still feed the kids?’

‘Course we can, you stupid cow.’ Dick stamped out of the house. Michael, his oldest son, heard him and shivered.

‘Morning, Mr Ransom,’ chorused his three employees when he arrived at the repair shop he owned.

He grunted.

‘Tom, I’ve got to go out. Hold the fort, will you?’

He took a packet from the safe in his office, and slipped it into his briefcase; fifty thousand pounds and a plane ticket to Spain.

Dick Ransom whistled cheerfully all the way to the airport.

Relief

‘I don’t know how long I can hold on, Richard,’ I gasped. Every bump in the road – and there were many – doubled the feeling of urgency in my bowels.

Snow lay a foot deep on the verge and our tyre chains crunched in ice; it must have been twenty below.

‘Look! Look there! Stop!’

There was a quaint little hut at the side of the road, two narrow stories high.

‘I guess it’s a toilet,’ said Richard, ‘but look at the signs on the doors. Voters below – politicians above!’

‘I don’t care. It beats digging a hole in the snow.’
