Friday Fictioneers – A Warm Deed

Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!

A special thank you to Na’ama for the photo and Rochelle for choosing it. It’s a marvellous prompt!

A warm deed

Jack strode beside the security fence, kicking up snow. He wasn’t frightened, but he slowed when he saw a figure on the far side.

The boy was as tall as Jack, but skinny and shivering.

“You look freezing.”

The boy nodded.

“I have no coat.”

“Not even at home?”

“No.”

Jack stripped off his new duffel-coat and threw it up the fence. It didn’t even reach halfway. He tried again. No better.

“I know,” he said, and climbed a tree almost overhanging the fence. He threw, and the coat sailed over the fence.

The boy put it on, and smiled.

Who am I?

Who am I?

I ask my parents. They are cagey, but I pester them. As I suspected, I am adopted. Mum hugs me, lets me weep on her shoulder. Gives me an address.

“That’s where she used to live,” she says, doubt in her voice.

A bus ride, two train journeys and a walk. It takes me until late afternoon. It’s a big house, casting a long shadow.

I fidget. Walk up and down. Knock at the front door.

She is grey-haired, rather sad. When she sees me, her eyes widen.

“Sally! Would you like to come in?” she says.

The First Time

Gerald marvelled at how strong Peter’s legs were, how supple, how beautiful, as he followed him up the steep path.

At the top, he gazed over the plain and exclaimed, “Great view!”

“Even better wi’ a beer. Get t’ bottles out, lad.”

Gerald smiled at him. Trust Peter to be thinking of beer!

They sat down, side by side, almost touching, and opened the bottles. Yeasty bubbles tickled Gerald’s nose as he drank. The warm sun caressed his skin.

His hand crept onto Peter’s. Peter looked earnestly at him. Suddenly, their hearts sang.

For the first time, they kissed.
