Friday Fictioneers – Nothing Pink

Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!

Nothing pink

It was beautiful.

I wanted it.

It was a toy washing machine, pink and shiny.

I pointed it out to Mom, showing her the battery powered motor that turned the drum, and the laundry baskets for your dolls’ clothes.

‘It would be a lovely Christmas present,’ I hinted.

‘Do you think Catherine would like it?’

I shrugged, ‘I expect so. I meant for…’

‘Oh, look at this, John!’ said Mom, brightly. ‘It’s a proper telescope. You could see the moon and planets and…all sorts of things.’

‘Fascinating,’ I sighed.

Nothing pink for me on Christmas morning.

Just a bloody telescope.

Boat for sale

It’s an immaculate vessel. The fishing tackle in the bow looks brand-new. The engine fires at the first attempt. The paintwork is almost unmarked. It’s also pink. Hmm.

I ask the agent who is handling the sale how long it has been on the market. He shrugs.

“A few months, maybe.”

“Who owned it?” I ask, curious.

“A lady.”

“Did she ever use it?”

The agent shrugs again.

“She took it out every day, monsieur, sometimes more than once.”

“Did she catch many fish?”

He grins.

“Not fish, monsieur. She had a large, pink bed in the hold!”

Vive l’amour!

A big decision

“So, which one would you like?”

James looked at the sunhats and wondered whether he dared say.

“They’re all baseball caps, mum. I don’t like baseball.”

“You’ve got to have a sunhat, James. Just choose one.”

Blushing, James pointed to the pink one. His older brother, Edward, sniggered.

“Oh, I don’t think that’s suitable. What about this one? It says ‘Aloha’. And it’s bright – you like colourful clothes.”

“The pink one’s only 35 talas; I’ve got enough spending money. Can I have it if I buy it myself?”

“Oh, James…”

“Let the boy have it,” said his dad, quietly.
