Friday Fictioneers – The End

Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!

The End

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

The street below my apartment is choked with police cars, blue lights strobing, sirens howling, deafening and disorientating me.

I shall not take the coward’s way out; I shall die as I have always lived, with zest. I hope, though, that someone will find these jottings I have made. I would like to feel that my actions might be understood if not condoned. Perhaps this text will be a mirror for my intentions.

In a few minutes I shall exit onto the roof and run along the terrace.

My narrative will end.

      • Is there any such thing as a noncorrupt dictatorship? I make this silly comment only because, well, that’s what I got stopped on. It’s like someone saying something is a “true fact.” Just triggered my weird little brain. I must be getting sleepy 🙂

  1. Most of us believe we have far more importance in the scheme of things than we actually do. Perhaps that kind of thinking is what has led him to this dreadful end. I definitely think you should expand this story!

  2. Oh my… what has he done? We can fill in the blanks in any way we desire – excellent of you to offer us this opportunity 😉
Whatever it is, he feels he was justified. I’m thinking only in his own mind but hey, we could be wrong…

    • Thank you for your perceptive and insightful comment. Yes, the rationality of the story teller is a key facet of his personality. He knew this day was going to come sooner or later, and he determines to meet his fate not merely courageously but with zest. He’s not suicidal at all.

  3. This is a very intriguing, and also disturbing story. Like everyone else I wonder what it is that drives the MC to such a drastic reaction. Fear of prison? Of being tortured or executed? Or of betraying someone? Is s/he a criminal, a dissident, a spy, a rebel?

    • Thank you for your detailed comment, Gabi. You found the story disturbing, but the back story is even more so. I’ve started work on a longer version of this piece of flash, but it may be a couple of weeks before I finish it.
