Friday Fictioneers – Two Hander

Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Post it on your blog, and include the Photoprompt and Inlinkz on your page. Link your story URL. Then the fun starts as you read other peoples’ stories and comment on them!

Two Hander

“Fancy mixing up Pinter and Pirandello,” sneered Lucas.

Susan cringed.

“Look! Even the chip shop knows which of us is the intellectual!” Lucas flaunted the Times wrapping his fish dinner. Susan fumbled her Daily Mirror package, spilling chips onto the pavement. “Oh, I’m sorry. How stupid of me,” she wailed.

“An excellent newspaper the Times, with the good taste to employ me to supply them with chess puzzles!”

Susan pointed to Lucas’s parcel. “That’s the paper from March 21st, isn’t it? Wasn’t that the issue where you made a mistake and they had to print a correction?”

    • Dear Spiced Mullings,
Thank you for reading and commenting. Susan has the laugh on Lucas this time – but they play this game of denigrating each other a lot…

    • Dear Rochelle
Thank you for reading and for your kind comments. You’re right about the magic. I fear it rarely worked in Susan’s favour; Lucas was a controlling so-and-so.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Lucas usually came out on top – Susan had low self-esteem. But fate threw her an opportunity, which she took eagerly. It would be nice to think it might boost her confidence.

    • Dear CE
Thank you for reading and commenting. Lucas has a lot to be smug about. Eton/Oxford, big house in Cheltenham, pied a terre in Strand on the Green, apartment in Medville (no, I’m making that up – he’s not posh enough for Medville). Murdoch’s politics are Lucas’s.
      He’s a really objectionable toad!

Thank you for reading and commenting. I’m pleased you enjoyed the pay back. I hope Susan didn’t pay too high a price for the put down. Lucas is a nasty piece of work.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I’m afraid I intended a much darker dynamic than keeping Lucas down to earth. He’s a control freak, and Susan has just stepped out of line…Thank you for your feedback. Taken together with others it suggests that I haven’t emphasized the dark side of the relationship enough, and that’s useful to know.
      With very best wishes

      • There was some darkness in it. And it was clear that Lucas is a control freak who thinks himself superior. Though overall it seemed like good-natured banter between longtime partners.
