An unexpected treat
“Don’t worry – I’ll pay,” said Ricardo, firmly.
“But the Gingerbread Restaurant’s expensive!” Roseline opened her eyes very wide, and Ricardo kissed her.
“No problem.”
Roseline giggled when the starter came; the dish looked like a painting. Ricardo smiled, and stroked his fingers along the cornrows of her hair. “Would you like some wine?” he suggested.
The food was – interesting, Roseline decided.
As they ate dessert, Ricardo cleared his throat.
“I had my exam results last Thursday.”
“You never told me! Were they good?”
“I was top.”
“Oh, well done, Ricardo!”
“I have an internship at Clinica Union Medica del Norte.”
“But – that’s in the Dominican Republic…”
“I’ll phone. And text. If you want to, you can join me there when you’ve finished your studies.”
Roseline’s heart sank.
“Do you love me, Ricardo?”
“Yes. Yes, of course”.
“Then let’s get married.”
Ricardo stared at her, then grinned.
“Why not?” he said.
Dear Penny,

Thank you for reading and commenting. I rather like that couple – they know what they want and aren’t afraid to go for it! They may appear again…

Romance blooms! He doesn’t sound so sure, though.

What a romantic evening, with a surprise ending! I suppose it makes all the difference what expression the person has when answering a marriage proposal with, “Why not?” It doesn’t sound that romantic on the surface, but if you know the person and you can hear the love in their voice, then… why not, indeed!

Dear Joy
Thank you for reading and for your thoughtful comments. Ricardo is a very single-minded individual, with his eyes firmly fixed on his medical career. He’s very fond of Roseline, but hadn’t really included her in his plans – until she forced his hand. And then he suddenly realised that he wanted to be sure she stayed in his life – so he said “Why not?” As you say, it was the love in his voice that really got through to Roseline.

Ah, you romantic, you! Let’s hope it wasn’t just the wine talking 🙂 A sweet take on the prompt. Hope you’re well and able to write. How’s your WIP going?

Dear Lynn
Thank you for reading and commenting. Yes, I suppose I am a bit of a romantic at heart! No, it wasn’t just the wine. Roseline very definitely wants to marry Ricardo. Ricardo, while being very fond of Roseline, was even more focused on building a successful career as a doctor. That’s why it took him from the previous Thursday to tell Roseline his exam results; he was setting up his internship – without consulting Roseline! But Roseline is a determined young woman, so instead of moaning that he hadn’t consulted her, how would she see him etc. etc. she pops the question. And that grabs his attention – he realises that actually he really wants her in his life!
Not a marriage made in heaven, then, but I bet they make it work!
With very best wishes

Sometimes these are the best relationships, though, the ones that grow gradually rather than the attraction that hits suddenly and fizzles out just as quickly
