The first sunny day

Italy in August is supposed to be hot and sunny, but for the first week of my holiday it had been cold and rainy. I might just as well have been in Wales. Mind you, the weather hadn’t deterred the mosquitos. Worse, one bite on my ankle had become infected and swollen, and I’d had to pay for treatment.

When the sun eventually came out, the heat was sultry, heavy, enervating. I was strolling up the street, wondering half-heartedly if I could allow myself a beer, when I heard a peculiar sound.

“Huffa-huffa-huffa…” I looked right and left. Nothing.

And there, in the porch of a house, I saw him, a dog mounted on a bitch.

He looked at me with world-weary eyes, as though to say, “A gentleman must pass the time somehow.”

I gave him a grin, and strolled on to buy myself that beer.

  1. Many’s the time when I talked myself into just such a thing using such flimsy portents. Especially if it involved alcohol. When I was a barman, we kept a directory on the shelf that listed everything that had happened on a particular day that might call for a drink. And there was always the useful “St. Groper’s Day,” which always falls on today. St. Groper is the patron of topers. No tears on St. Groper’s, they say. Nicely told.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I’m glad you found the story amusing. I don’t think the main character really needed any reason for drinking, he just felt more cheerful after seeing the dog!

Thank you for reading and commenting. I’m glad the story made you smile. And no, the mozzie bite would have been no fun at all. I was very unkind inflicting it on my main character!
