Every week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields (thank you, Rochelle!) hosts a flash fiction challenge, to write a complete story, based on a photoprompt, with a beginning, middle and end, in 100 words or less. Visit Rochelle’s blog for the rules, the Photoprompt and Inlinkz (the blue frog). Then join the fun by reading other peoples’ stories and commenting on them!

The Food Technologist
Two champagne flutes – a dribble of champagne in each – stood waiting to be washed. A single red rose, bought by Lynn for Richard, stood proudly at the centre of the table. They’d been married a year and a day.
Richard cut the bread for their breakfast toast.
“I offer you love, my darling!” he said, proffering the slice with a heart-shaped hole to Lynn.
“Hmm. The dough was unevenly mixed, probably because the mixer was poorly maintained,” said Lynn. “Look. You can see there are fewer bubbles at the edge of the hole.”
“Oh, Lynn! You’ve no sense of romance!”
Actually my wife is like that. She’s a veteran foodie and would notice those details. I’d be totally oblivious.

Dear Penny,
Usually it’s the other way around in the romance department. Reminds me of the time I prepared a candlelight dinner. My husband came in, asked if we’d had a power failure and turned on the TV.
Cute story. We should all have such romantic husbands.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Oh dear, and only married one year, and she’s requesting perfection already , without acknowledging her man’s genuine attempt at romance……..

Haha, Ok, that reminds me of an Amanda Palmer song, “The Killing Type” https://youtu.be/dyE2MLq24OE?list=PL676Af4EFlsppvahsidwXqAbzNA-GZRgi
Hope the link works for you, I’m new at this sort of copying stuff…

What a sweet husband and how much he cares to not even get mad. I sense they will make a good couple, the pragmatic and the romantic, though their house might look like chaos to an outsider, with the roll of another anniversary .
Beautifully written, as always.

Thank you for the very kind comment, Moon. I agree they will make a good couple; they already understand each others foibles.

Ha! So it’s not only men that have a problem with romance? Nicely written Penny

Quite so, Lynn. I think we all have our blind spots, men and women both. I don’t think Lynn is unromantic at heart – after all, she bought Richard a red rose – but it’s breakfast and she’s in work mode; she’s the food technologist of the title.
Thank you so much for commenting.

That was fun. I love the role reversal with the husband being the romantic. I hear that such men do exist… 🙂 I try to imagine if two hopeless romantics living together really would be such bliss… I don’t think I could stand it.

Haha! That’s a shrewd comment! All marriages need a blend of romance and practicality, don’t they? Thank you very much for commenting.

She certainly did, Spicedmullings! But Richard wasn’t offended. In fact, there’s an alternative ending where the last sentence is replaced by
“Oh, Lynn!” Richard sighed, and kissed her very tenderly. They were both late for work that morning!
It’s a few words over the 100-word limit, though!
Thank you for commenting.

Ouchh…. Thats the bad side of being a perfectionist…
Remembering the anniversary and being romantic!!!!! Reminded me of my husband…Just that he is stark opposite 😉 Yet he is the love of my life. 🙂
